How this calculator works

The calculator checks whether the car is in its first tax year, applies the standard zero-emission vehicle rate after year one, and tests the original list price against the threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement.

It is an estimate because future VED rates can change and exact tax periods depend on the DVLA record. Check the registration number with DVLA before purchase.

Worked examples

Model 3 Long Range RWD

At a £44,990 list price, a 2026 car sits below the £50,000 zero-emission threshold: £10 in year one and the standard £200 rate afterwards at current rates.

Model Y Long Range AWD

At a £51,990 list price, a 2026 car exceeds the threshold. From year two, the current £200 standard rate plus £440 supplement gives an estimated £640 a year for five years.

Frequently asked questions

Do electric cars pay road tax in the UK in 2026?+

Yes. Electric cars are no longer exempt. From 1 April 2026, a new zero-emission car pays the £10 first-year rate and then the £200 standard annual rate under the current tables.

Does the Expensive Car Supplement apply to a Tesla?+

It can. For a zero-emission car first registered on or after 1 April 2026, the current threshold is an original list price above £50,000. The £440 supplement is normally paid with the standard rate for five years, starting with the second tax payment.

Is road tax based on the used price I paid?+

No. The Expensive Car Supplement uses the car's published list price when new, including factory options, rather than its later used purchase price.
