UK Tesla Superchargers use time-of-day pricing with two tiers — members and non-members. With a Charging Membership (£9.99/month), you pay 25p/kWh off-peak and 41p/kWh peak. Without membership, rates are 35p off-peak and 60p peak. Prices are charged per kWh and billed automatically through your Tesla account.

Current UK Supercharger pricing

Time bandMember (£9.99/mo)Non-member
Off-peak (11PM–9AM)25p/kWh35p/kWh
Peak (9AM–11PM)41p/kWh60p/kWh

Exact rates can vary slightly by location. The membership pays for itself if you Supercharge more than roughly 65 kWh per month (about one full charge on a Model Y).

Tesla changed from per-minute pricing to per-kWh billing in 2019. This benefits faster-charging vehicles and makes costs more predictable.

Non-Tesla EV drivers can now use Tesla Superchargers in the UK via the Tesla app or a payment card, but pay a higher rate. Some sites also charge a connection fee.

The Tesla app shows real-time pricing at each Supercharger before you plug in.

Cost per session by battery size

The table below shows typical 20–80% Supercharger session costs at member rates. Non-members pay roughly 35% more.

Supercharger vs home charging

Home charging is always cheaper than Supercharging. On an EV tariff (7–9p/kWh overnight), it is dramatically cheaper. For a driver doing 200 miles per week in a Model Y Long Range (3.7 mi/kWh):

  • Home (EV tariff ~8p): ~£225/year
  • Home (standard 25p): ~£703/year
  • Supercharger member (peak 41p): ~£1,152/year
  • Supercharger non-member (peak 56p): ~£1,686/year
  • Supercharger member (off-peak 25p): ~£703/year

The best strategy for most UK Tesla owners is to charge at home overnight on an EV tariff for daily driving and use Superchargers only on longer journeys — ideally during off-peak hours with a membership.

How to reduce your Supercharger costs

The single biggest saving is charging off-peak (11PM–9AM), which drops the rate from 41p to 25p (members) or 60p to 35p (non-members) — roughly 40% cheaper.

The Tesla Charging Membership (£9.99/month) drops your rates to 25p off-peak and 41p peak — saving 10p and 19p/kWh respectively vs non-member rates. It pays for itself with roughly one full charge per month.

The Tesla app shows real-time pricing at every site before you navigate there. It will route you to the most cost-efficient Supercharger en route automatically when you use trip planning.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Supercharger pricing vary by time of day?

Tesla uses time-of-day pricing to encourage charging during off-peak hours (11PM–9AM) when electricity is cheaper to procure. Peak rates (9AM–11PM) are higher due to grid demand. Exact rates can also vary slightly by location based on local electricity costs and infrastructure.

How long does a Tesla Supercharger session take?

A typical 20–80% charge takes 20–40 minutes depending on the model and whether the site has V2 or V3 Superchargers. V3 chargers (up to 250 kW) are significantly faster — on a compatible Model 3 or Model Y, they can add up to 170 miles of range in around 15 minutes. V2 chargers peak at 150 kW and are slower.

Do you need a Tesla account to use a Supercharger?

Tesla owners need a Tesla account linked to their car. Charging is billed automatically through the app — no card tap required. Non-Tesla EV drivers can use the Tesla app to start a session and pay by card or through the app.
