The approved amount is 10,000 miles at 45p plus 2,000 at 25p. If the employer pays less, the difference may qualify for Mileage Allowance Relief.
From 1 September 2026, HMRC's advisory electric rates are 7p per business mile for home charging and 15p per mile for public charging. Employers can use a blended rate where evidence supports the charging mix.
For an employee using their own car for business travel, the approved mileage amount is generally 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p thereafter. The same mileage framework can apply to an employee-owned electric car.
For an employee-owned car, you may be able to claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference between HMRC's approved amount and what your employer paid. Tax relief is on the shortfall at your marginal tax rate, not a repayment of the whole shortfall.
